Can I reverse or shorten a self-exclusion period once I have set it at an Ontario online casino?

Self-exclusion in Ontario's regulated online market is deliberately hard to undo — that's the whole point. Once you've committed to a period, you cannot simply cancel or shorten it mid-term. The exclusion runs its full course.

How the rules actually work

There are two layers of self-exclusion available to Ontario players, and both treat the chosen term as binding.

The first is BetGuard (betguard.ca), Ontario's centralized program. It enables individuals aged 19 and older to voluntarily opt out of all Ontario regulated online gaming platforms through one online portal. BetGuard covers the full range of regulated digital gambling sites in Ontario — not just OLG, but every operator in the market. The term options are six months, one year, five years, or a custom period. Once enrolled, players are prevented from accessing existing accounts, creating new accounts, or receiving marketing communications from any regulated iGaming site in Ontario. There is no mechanism to cut that term short after the fact.

The second layer is each operator's own site-level self-exclusion program. All iGaming operators in Ontario participate in BetGuard, and are also required to maintain their own self-exclusion program that meets the requirements set out in the Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming. Those standards require clearly defined term lengths of at least six months, one year, and five years — and once an individual self-excludes, they are immediately logged out and unable to log in for the duration of their exclusion. Again, no mid-term reversal.

The distinction between self-exclusion and spending/gaming limits

It's worth being clear about what the 24-hour cooling-off rule does and doesn't apply to. Where a gaming limit has been previously established by a player, a request to relax or eliminate that limit shall only be implemented after a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours. That cooling-off requirement covers deposit limits, loss limits, and session time limits — not self-exclusion. Self-exclusion is a separate, stronger commitment with no equivalent "wait 24 hours and you're free" escape hatch.

If you've set a short-term break in play (one day up to three months), rather than a formal self-exclusion, operators must provide the option to take a one-day, one-week, one-month, two-month, or three-month break, during which the player is unable to place further wagers. The rules for cancelling or shortening a break mid-term are set by each operator — check their terms directly on their site.

Verifying you're on a regulated site

Every internet gaming website offered by a fully registered and approved operator in Ontario will display both the iGaming Ontario and BetGuard logos — a signal that the site is managed by iGaming Ontario and regulated by the AGCO.
